Club shut down after woman rides horse onto the dancefloor
A Miami nightclub has had its licence revoked after a women rode a horse into the middle of the crowded dancefloor last week.
Footage of the incident was widely shared across social media last week, which shows the obviously terrified horse bucking and rearing in the middle of dozens of punters in the South Beach nightspot Mokai Lounge. Somewhat miraculously, no one was injured.
The subsequent public outrage sparked an official police investigation into the incident; a petition was also circulated online calling for the club to be shut down. On Friday, Miami City Manager Jimmy Morales announced he had revoked Mokai’s licence, calling the stunt a threat to public safety.
“I was disgusted and offended that any legitimate businessperson would think this was an appropriate action to take,” Morales told The Miami Herald. “This activity was not permitted, and as soon as we became aware, I immediately instructed staff to act swiftly in remedying this situation.”
“What kind of idiot would do something like this to an animal and endanger people’s lives at that club?” Miami Mayor Dan Gelder added. “It’s not tolerable, not right, not humane.”
Luckily, the Miami horse was reportedly found safe and well on Friday. Watch footage of the incident below.
It’s not the first time a nightclub has attempted a stunt like this. Back in 2015, David Guetta was roundly slammed by the public — and fellow producer Deadmau5 — for using a horse during a performance at Pacha Ibiza.
“Fuck David Guetta and fuck Pacha,” Deadmau5 wrote at the time. “Horses belong on a farm. Not in a shitty overpriced nightclub to be subjected to a shitty overpaid DJ.”
