Chromeo reveals details of upcoming album in Reddit Q&A
Yesterday, Chromeo (the funky duo Dave 1 and P-Thugg) participated in an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on Reddit. The duo answered hundreds of questions from fans – or “Funkateers and Chromettes,” as Chromeo dubbed them – and disclosed some previously unknown details of their upcoming album, White Women.
During the session, the pair was asked about guest appearances on the new album, Chromeo’s first since 2010’s Business Casual. They answered with quite the list of collaborators: Toro Y Moi, Solange Knowles, Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend, LCD Soundsystem’s Pat Mahoney, and Fool’s Gold duo Oliver. Needless to say, that response was met with unparalleled excitement from fans.
As for the meaning of the album’s eyebrow-raising title, Chromeo explained that it was inspired by iconic fashion photographer Helmut Newton; White Women is the title of his first book. “He’s a huge influence on us… you know, the legs, that 80s sexy look,” Dave wrote. “We thought the title was ballsy, funny, was going to get people thinking. Our music always blurred boundaries between past and present (is it retro? is it modern? is it both?) and now we want to blur boundaries between gender and race as well.”
Musically, according to the AMA, White Women will be “better, funkier, poppier, catchier [and] happier” than Business Casual. Dave 1 also fielded a question about whether Chromeo is tempted to make “poppy EDM beats,” and his response was no doubt a reassuring one to longtime fans of the group. “We would [be] if we knew how to produce music like that,” Dave wrote. “We have no idea how it’s made!”
In addition to talking about the album during the AMA session, the duo gamely tackled some less serious questions as well. When asked which of the two is the bigger ladies man, Dave 1 replied, “One is bigger [and] one is taller so it all evens out.” They also handled a flurry of comments about the effects of their sexy grooves. One fan asked how many pregnancies Chromeo expect to cause with the release of their new album -Â ”They say population is declining so let’s just say we’re on a demographic mission,” Dave replied – while another male fan joked that seeing the band live got him pregnant. “Bring the kid,” Dave joked. “We should be his godfathers.”
While the album currently has no confirmed release date, U.S. fans will be able to catch the self-professed “kings of lovers’ funk” on tour early next year. Until the album drops, Chromeo fans can listen to the first single from White Women, “Over Your Shoulder.”
